Approaches to Vitamin B5 Acne Treatment

By now most online acne sufferers have probably heard of vitamin B5 acne treatment, but in case you haven't, B5 is known as one of the most effective natural acne solutions available. Unlike typical treatments, vitamin B5 (also known as Pantothenic Acid) has gained its popularity almost totally by word of mouth, spreading via internet forums following the discovery of a clinical study performed by Dr. Lit-Hung Leung in Singapore. In the study, high doses of vitamin B5 (ranging from 10 to 20 grams per day) were shown to increase the rate of sebum metabolism, leading to a total remission of acne for almost 100% of participants.

Vitamin Info

Now that B5 has become more popular, there is some debate over just what is the best way to take the vitamin in order to maximize effectiveness and decrease the chances of side effects. The possible side effects for B5 are mild compared to other acne treatments, but include stomach irritation and diarrhea.

Vitamin Info

The most common solution is to take standard vitamin B5 supplements in the form of capsules or tablets. The usual pill size is 500mg, meaning you would have to take 20 pills per day in order to get 10 grams (the average recommended dose to stop acne). For best results, pills should be taken at four intervals per day, since your body can only absorb so much at once. This solution works, but is certainly an inconvenient one for people who don't like to frequently take pills. Also, it can get expensive quickly. Another potential problem is simply the limitations of standard pills, in that your body can only absorb a fraction of the contents.

Another method is the use of pure B5 powder, taken with water. Powder has the advantage of being more easily absorbed by the body, meaning the B5 you take will be that much more potent. Also, vitamin B5 powder may be easier to take for people who dislike pills, and it almost always costs less. The main disadvantage is that it takes a bit more effort to prepare, as it does not easily dissolve in water, and also tastes quite horrible. Thankfully, due to its high absorbance, you may require less powder. However, you will still need to take it 3-4 times per day when starting out.

The last method is the use of time-release pills, and this is the one I most recommend. Time-release B5 has the advantage of a higher rate of absorbance, along with the convenience of taking pills rather than preparing the powder. Time-release pills are usually a bit more expensive than standard capsules or tablets, but this is generally offset by the fact that you need to take less due to the higher rate of absorbance. Unfortunately, even with time-release, in order to get enough B5 to stop acne you will still need to take doses at multiple times per day.

In order to minimize the chances of side effects, some vitamin B5 acne treatments include other vitamins in their formula as well. These may help to a small degree, but with the high levels of B5 most users require, additional supplements are really the best way to avoid any deficiencies. For best results, a daily multivitamin and B-complex (with Biotin) should be taken.

Biotin is important in that it woks with B5 to improve the metabolism of fats, carbohydrates and proteins; and can be reduced by high amounts of vitamin B5. This is due to the fact that both vitamins are absorbed by the same receptor molecule, and thus are in competition (along with other B vitamins). In order to get the best level of absorbance, it's best to avoid competing with B5 and instead take your other supplements at a different time.

Vitamin B5 is both a highly effective and an extremely safe means to clearing up acne. It has worked for thousands, including myself. Whichever approach you choose, make sure you stick with a steady regimen, and you're almost certain to see results.

Vitamin D Dangers - What You Need to Know Now

The Dangers Associated With a Vitamin D Deficiency

Vitamin Info

Scientists are validating the critical role that vitamin D plays in regulating cell division and differentiation. These findings are linking a deficiency of vitamin D to a host of common age-related maladies. These findings are alarming as you dig deep into understanding the results.

Vitamin Info

This new research shows startling evidence of a widespread deficiency in vitamin D. Scientists are suggesting to increase vitamin D intake to 1,000 IU per day. The current RDA is only around 400 IU per day.

Our bodies have the capabilities to synthesize vitamin D from natural sunlight. However, weather, being indoors during the winter months, and the increase in sunscreen protection, have greatly reduced our capabilities to produce optimum levels of vitamin D.

Vitamin D is essential in our bodies, regardless of our age. It is found in very few foods, but is added to some and is available as a supplement. Needed for bone growth, and overall health of bones. With out vitamin D, bones can become thin and brittle.

Obtaining vitamin D naturally from the foods we eat can be suggested. In particular, older adults and breast fed babies, as breast milk does not supply a sufficient dose.
In addition people who are obese, see very little sunlight, and have dark skin, should consider increasing the vitamin D intake.

Very few foods offer a natural source of vitamin D. It can be found in some fish flesh such as salmon or tuna, or the fish oils are a good source. Fortified foods with vitamin D are you best source next to a daily supplement.

We should not take our vitamin D deficiency lightly, do something about it today.

What are you waiting for, learn more about Vitamin D before it is too late.

Helpful Information About Vitamin Supplements And Acne

It is a fact of life that at some time in their lives the majority of people are going to have to deal in some way with the condition of acne. For many it might hopefully only be a minor bother, but for others it can be a major issue to be dealt with. Although through the years there have been items discovered relating to its cause and how to possibly treat it (certain herbal remedies, prescription drugs), much continues to remain unknown about this condition and how best to deal with it.

Vitamin Info

One of the long-standing theories regarding acne that has come under scrutiny in recent times is whether or not a person's diet has a direct effect on their skin condition and does in fact bring acne on.

Vitamin Info

For many years it was simply taken as fact that if a person ate a diet that was high in fat content, this would cause their complexion to be much oilier and would set the stage for acne to appear.

Further research done over the years has established that there is in fact not any link between acne and diets that are high in fat content. It has been determined that the bacterial growth taking place within pores that are clogged is in fact the problem, and a person's diet habits do not really play a part in this. This then would be the prevailing theory for 20 years or so, until about the mid-nineties.

Then, in 1997, another study was released putting back the emphasis on the diet and how it does have an effect on being a cause of acne appearing.

That study which states that the body not being able to produce a sufficient amount of Coenzyme A to be able to break up those fatty acids producing sebum which brings on the acne was furnished by Dr. Lit Hung Leung. The enzyme Coenzyme A is what is responsible for taking the fatty acids and breaking them down.

The fact of the matter is that the body does not produce vitamin B5 which is a part of Coenzyme A. This will then result in a shortage of the Coenzyme A and what is there will go about its first function which is to work on synthesizing the sex hormones. This will then leave little or nothing left to deal with breaking down the fatty acids in the body.

The net result of all of this is the body being left with too many fatty acids and too much production of seburn all leading to one suffering more acne.

The test Dr. Leung conducted was done on 100 people. Those with lesser cases of acne received 10 grams per day of B5 and used a B5 topical cream with great results. For those with more severe cases of acne the dosage of pantothetic acid (B5) was increased to 15-20 grams per day again with outstanding results as well. The treatment was extended over a six month period with continuing great results.

The bottom line is that at least based on this study, those dealing with acne would be well-advised to add vitamin B5 to their daily regimen. There is much positive to be said regarding acne and vitamin supplements.

Of course, as with anything else concerning one's health, they should consult with their doctor and keep them in the loop.

Importance of Vitamin B

The essential B vitamins like Thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, folic acid, cyanogobalamin, pangmic acid, biotin, choline and inositol together constitute the Vitamin B complex group. The major advantages of including Vitamin B in the diet is that it is helpful in energy production, good digestion, maintains the nervous system, skin, hair and nails healthy. These water soluble vitamins play a major role in the body. Lack of Vitamin B in the body causes beriberi, degeneration of the sex glands, digestive disturbances and neurological problems. Intake of Vitamin B improves the body's resistance to stress, promotes good muscle tone, reduces muscle spasms, hand numbness, leg cramps and helps in the regulation of blood pressure. It is also responsible for detoxification, maintenance of sugar levels, blood formation, synthesis of proteins and maintenance of appetite.

Vitamin Info

Thiamine commonly known as Vitamin B1 is essential for the transmission of nerve signals between the spinal cord and the brain. Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) is necessary for energy metabolism and normal reproduction. Vitamin B3 (niacin) is responsible for cell respiration and prevents the attack of harmful chemicals. Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) is involved in the synthesis of fatty acids and utilization of the other vitamins. Pyridoxine, commonly known as Vitamin B6 helps in the formation of red blood cells. Folic acid lessens depression, regulates sleep and helps in maintaining appetite. Vitamin B12 known as the cyanogobalamin is the most potent vitamin that is responsible for maintaining the nerve cells healthy and helps in the production of DNA and RNA. These are the health benefits of Vitamin B complex and so the intake of Vitamin B complex in the diet is very much necessary for the body to lead a healthy life.

Thorne Research - Pets - Gastriplex - For Canine and Feline 180 Capsules Overview

Gastriplex is a comprehensive intestinal support product that combines nutrients for mucosal support and gut integrity with probiotics and nutrients that support the body's normal inflammatory response. Glutamine plays a key role in maintaining mucosal cell integrity and gut barrier function. Glutamine also enhances the gut's immune function, in part by increasing the production of secretory immunoglobulin a (sIgA), an antibody that promotes immunity. N-acetyl D-glucosamine (NAG) also helps maintain normal intestinal permeability. It enhances mucus production and is involved in the biosynthesis of glycosaminoglycans, the building blocks of connective tissue. Saccharomyces boulardii is a probiotic yeast that decreases intestinal permeability. Like glutamine, this beneficial yeast exerts its protective effect on the GI tract by increasing the production of sIgA. Lactobacillus sporogenes is a safe, effective probiotic that survives in stomach acid and produces L(+) lactic acid in the intestine. Probiotics are successfully used to help maintain a healthy GI tract. Slippery elm, a demulcent and emollient, provides soothing protection for the mucus membranes of the intestinal tract. Deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) supports a healthy intestinal lining by helping to increase blood flow and maintain normal muscle relaxation.

Vitamin K - Benefits, Deficiency And Food Sources

Vitamin K is needed for proper bone formation and blood clotting. In both cases, vitamin K does this by helping the body transport calcium. Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin. Vitamin K is best known for its role in helping blood clot properly, and in preventing excessive bleeding. It also plays an important role in bone health. There are two naturally occurring forms of vitamin K. Plants synthesize phylloquinone, also known as vitamin K1. Bacteria synthesize a range of vitamin K forms, using repeating 5-carbon units in the side chain of the molecule. Vitamin K is used by doctors when treating an overdose of the drug warfarin. Vitamin K plays an important role in blood clotting, and studies have shown it to maintain strong bones in the elderly.

Vitamin Info

Vitamin K is most commonly found in green leaf-like food like spinach, green tea, cabbage, turnip greens, and brussels sprouts. Certain medicines may interact with vitamin K. Those patients who applied the Vitamin K after the procedure noticed a significant reduction in the severity of bruising. Individuals with vitamin K deficiency are usually more likely to have bruising and bleeding. Dermatologists have recently found Vitamin K to be successful on the treatment of dark circles under the eyes and bruising on the face. An examination of the under-eye colour at the beginning of the study and at the end found a significant lightening in the group using the vitamin K and retinol combination.

Vitamin Info

Benefits of vitamin K to us:-

Vitamins for Beautiful Skin

We all know vitamins and minerals are essential for proper function of every organ in the body, but what about our skin? The skin is no exception. Here are a few vitamins to focus on and why.

Vitamin Info

1. Vitamin A - Vitamin A is critical for normal life cycle of skin cells. Vitamin A deficiency causes skin to become dry, fragile and prone to wrinkles. If a person is Vitamin A deficient, no skin treatment will work properly. Vitamin A's greatest skin benefits including helping with fine lines and wrinkles. As some have learned the hard way, attempting to hide fine lines and wrinkles behind layers of make up is a losing battle. Better to improve the condition of your skin with products containing retinoids. Prescription products like Retin-A and Renova utilize Vitamin A derivatives to great effect, but some people's skin may react with uncomfortable stinging, redness or scaling. Fortunately, "Retinol," a non-prescription Vitamin-A derivative contained in many over-the-counter products can provide much of the same benefits with less risk of irritation and sun sensitivity. However, due to the lower levels of retinoids in some consumer products, it may take a bit longer to see the desired result.

Vitamin Info

2. B-complex - The term B-complex usually refers to a group of vitamins that includes vitamins B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenate), B6 (pyridoxine), B12 (cyancobalamine) and folate.

Vitamins B1 and B2 are critical for energy production in the cells. Overt deficiencies of vitamins B1 and B2 are known to cause special forms of dermatitis (along with many other problems). Mild deficiencies usually go unnoticed but still may produce some degree of skin damage.

Vitamin B's greatest skin benefits include a healthy glow and moisture retention. Vitamins B-3 (niacin) and B-5 (pantothenic acid) have become popular additions to skin-care products because of their ability to assist in retaining moisture. B-3 is a relatively new ingredient on the marketplace but has demonstrated great promise, offering a milder alternative to acidic exfoliators like glycolic and salicylic acid, which some feel is too harsh for their complexions. B-5 is a more common skin-care additive, and is widely recognized for its (along with Vitamin E) moisturizing ability. It's also good for those with sensitive skin, as some creams made with Vitamin-E have been known to cause irritation.

3. Vitamin C, iron and copper - Vitamin C, iron and copper together are all three important for the synthesis of collagen, a key structural protein in the skin. Deficiency of each of these nutrients reduces skin resilience and ability to heal (in addition to other health problems). Vitamin C is abundant in fresh fruits and vegetables. Iron is found in whole grains and meat products. Copper is found in a variety of foods and its deficiency is uncommon except in people taking zinc supplements.

Vitamin C's greatest skin benefits are in repairing sun damage.

This vitamin has been one of skin-care's hot sellers for the past several years due to its proven effectiveness as an antioxidant. Antioxidants are a critical natural defense against "free radicals," unstable molecules that age the skin as a result of pollution, smoking and sun exposure. Topical Vitamin C can protect the skin from UV damage caused by prolonged sun exposure by reducing the amount of free radical formation. However, while it can help safeguard against skin damage and reduce discoloration, it should be used in conjunction with, not in place of, a good sunscreen. Yet another benefit of Vitamin C is its ability to enhance the synthesis of collagen: a critically important skin protein that strengthens structural support and resilience of the skin.

4. Vitamin E - This Vitamin's greatest skin benefits include the repair if dry, rough skin. Vitamin-E (alpha tocopherol) is another powerful antioxidant that is commonly used in lotions and creams for its moisturizing ability. Though some of the "miraculous" healing claims of Vitamin-E supporters have been exaggerated over the years, it is still widely recognized for its proven ability to help retain moisture in the skin.

5. Vitamin K - This Vitamin's greatest skin benefits include repairing dark, under-eye circles. A good night's sleep is always recommended as well. Topical Vitamin-K is a good additional defense against discoloration under the eyes. It is often used as a treatment for spider veins. Topical Vitamin K enters through the pores all the way to the damaged capillary or artery and helps to clot the blood, thus stopping any seepage (often the cause of dark circles) and allowing the tissue to heal itself.

What Happens When Your Vitamin D Levels Are Low?

Vitamin D is critical to good health, but most people don't know what happens when your Vitamin D levels are low.  Actually, the sad fact is that an alarming number of children in America are Vitamin D deficient as well as most adults.

Vitamin Info

Here is a list of what happens when your Vitamin D Levels are Low:

Vitamin Info

Bones and teeth cannot absorb and metabolize calcium and phosphorous which causes them to become soft, weak and brittle. You can develop Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) Children have a higher risk of developing rickets The immune system is weakened. You may have a higher risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis The risk of damage from low levels of radiation is increased You may have a higher risk of developing cancer. You may have more problems with weight control You may have more asthma symptoms You may have more high blood pressure readings You have an increased risk of falling

Studies have shown that Vitamin D can cut the risk of breast cancer by 24%.  Imagine!  And it's so easy to obtain this awesome vitamin.  The sun gives it to us...FREE!  Just spend a few minutes in the sunshine every day and you will be healthier.

Vitamin D is also found in several foods such as fish, eggs, milk and cod liver oil.  It can also be supplemented daily into your diet.

What is Rickets?

Rickets is what happens when your Vitamin D levels are low.  It results in skeletal deformities, muscular weakness and weak bones.  This includes pain or tenderness in the spine, pelvis, legs or teeth.  It can cause increased cavities in the teeth, increased bone fractures or bowlegs.  In children, this is so important because their bones are rapidly growing.  A Vitamin D deficiency can cause limbs to become bowed and the rib cage can become deformed as well.  Low serum calcium levels can even cause seizures in severe cases.

It's important to supplement with Vitamin D when breastfeeding because mother's milk is typically low in Vitamin D.  Infants should be given a Vitamin D supplement during this time and continue throughout their formative years.

Vitamin D is currently being studied for connections to various cancers, osteoporosis, diabetes, liver disease, high blood pressure, multiple sclerosis, cystic fibrosis, senile warts, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), tooth retention, muscle strength and weight gain.

If you don't spend enough time in the sunshine, it's so very easy to add a Vitamin D supplement to your diet.  It comes in a tiny soft gel...inexpensive and easy to swallow.

Dosage varies depending on who you're listening to.  Personally, I take a 1,000 IU soft gel daily.  500 IU would most likely be adequate under normal circumstances. Obviously if you have a Vitamin D related problem, it would require a much larger dose.  Discuss your specific needs with a natural healthcare professional and always use your common sense when taking any medication or supplement.

Now that you know what happens when your Vitamin D levels are low, take that step toward health by making sure you maintain an adequate supply of Vitamin D...everyday!

Topical Vitamin C - The Wonder Medicine For Skin

Vitamin C is an anti-oxidant. Anti-oxidants are those products that protect the body from free radicals and help slow down aging. Vitamin C in topical form also stimulates collagen production and helps replenish the natural vitamin C found in cells of skin that gets reduced due to sun damage. Vitamin C topical creams are very popular for many facial problems such as fine lines, etc., but you have to carefully select the preparation, as vitamin C is very unstable. Let us find out more about the properties of topical Vitamin C.

Vitamin Info

How Topical Vitamin C Works?

Vitamin Info

Vitamin C, being an anti-oxidant, reduces the sun damage caused on the skin by neutralizing free radicals. It thus reduces sun damage to an extent. Though it cannot be used as a sunscreen, but if formulated with sunscreens, it adds to the property of protection against sun damage. Vitamin C also stimulates collagen and elastin production in the skin. As we age, we lose collagen. We also lose collagen because of sun exposure. Vitamin C helps reduce this loss of collagen. Vitamin C topical formulations are therefore used to reduce age lines and sun damage. It may also protect against sunburn to a certain extent.

Why Topical And Not Oral?

If you take more oral Vitamin C, the body will flush it out. Topical vitamin C preparations reach, where they are required most. But vitamin C as L ascorbic acid is highly unstable and one has to be very careful in choosing a vitamin C topical cream. Consult your doctor about the right selection so that you may get the best out of Vitamin C.

Vitamin D Deficiency: It's Real!

Vitamin D deficiency has been researched, discussed, refuted, and ultimately, recognized as a true health issue in the United States. A staggering number of Americans do not get enough vitamin D. According to a study conducted by Dr. Michael Melamed at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine published in the Journal of Pediatrics in August of 2009, over 70% of American children are not getting enough vitamin D and the number is higher for older Americans. A long-term deficiency of vitamin D can lead to numerous serious health problems.

Vitamin Info

Symptoms of a deficiency are subtle or may be nonexistent but could be bone pain, muscle weakness, low energy and depression. The list of possible health problems is long and includes the obvious: osteoporosis and osteoarthritis because vitamin D processes calcium for strong bones, but may also cause high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, severe asthma and other lung diseases, and an increased risk of cancer, specifically of the breast, colon, prostate and pancreas. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to Type 2 Diabetes and autoimmune diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis and Crohn's disease. There is even evidence that deficiency could lead to cognitive impairment in older adults and is associated with a larger amount of belly fat!

Vitamin Info

Testing to evaluate the level of vitamin D in your body provides valuable information to help you determine whether you are getting enough to protect yourself against disease and stay healthy. The gold standard for screening of vitamin D is the 25-hydroxyvitamin D test. In the kidneys, vitamin D changes into an active form of the vitamin. The 25-hydroxyvitamin D test measures vitamin D in its active form which helps control calcium and phosphate levels in the body. An adequate level of vitamin D is considered to be 30 or more ng/ml (nanograms per milliliter) but 36-48 ng/ml is recommended for cancer prevention.

Vitamin D, also known as the Sunshine Vitamin, is not easy to get through diet but it can be found in fortified foods such as milk, cheese, grains and in food such as eggs, fish and fish liver oil. Supplements can provide additional vitamin D but the primary source of the vitamin is from the sun. Only 10-15 minutes of sun exposure 2 to 3 times per week provides adequate vitamin D, however, Americans' increasing concerns about skin cancer has led to avoidance of the sun and increased use of sunscreen, which blocks vitamin D absorption. Our strictly limited exposure to natural sunlight is thought to play a major role in vitamin D deficiency. During the winter the reduced hours of daylight make it even harder to get enough sun exposure. Some groups of people have a reduced ability to absorb vitamin D and would benefit from supplements including those that have darker skin, are taking certain medications, have some intestinal diseases, such as Crohn's and celiac disease, are obese or have had gastric bypass surgery.

Research has shown that it is almost impossible to acquire enough vitamin D from diet alone. A supplement or adequate sun exposure is required to reach recommended amounts of vitamin D. The current recommendation is that children and adults should receive 10-15 mcg or 400-600 IU per day while adults 70 and over should receive 20 mcg or 800 IU per day. The National Osteoporosis Foundation is recommending 800-1000 IU per day with an upper limit of 2000 IU but there are concerns of possible side effects with extremely large doses, for adults, over 4000 IU daily.

While a deficiency causes serious problems, according to the Mayo Health Clinic, the health benefits of adequate amounts of vitamin D are numerous, especially in older adults. Cancer prevention, elimination of belly fat, stronger cognitive abilities and healthy bones will help you coast into old age. Getting screened for vitamin D and taking steps to ensure that you are getting an adequate amount of the vitamin can help prevent serious health issues and improve your quality of life, today and for the long-term.

Best Vitamin for Energy

We need all vitamins and minerals for good health, well being and energy. However, particular nutrient deficiencies are associated with reduced energy and chronic tiredness. These include iron, B12, folic acid and magnesium. We will explore each of these nutrients; how they contribute to tiredness; how to test their levels in the body; and symptoms of a deficiency.

Vitamin Info

Iron

Vitamin Info

Iron is an essential mineral needed for the manufacture of hemoglobin, the part of red blood cells that carries oxygen and is needed for energy production. When iron levels are low, red blood cells can't carry enough oxygen to the body's tissues, causing fatigue. When hemoglobin levels are low, anemia occurs.

There are two types of iron: heme iron (from animal sources) and non-heme iron (from plant sources). The body absorbs heme iron much more easily than non-heme iron, which is why vegetarians are at greater risk of iron-deficiency anemia.

Symptoms of deficiency: fatigue (especially on exertion); pale lower eyelids, palms, nails, tongue; brittle nails; headaches; constipation; inflamed tongue.

Testing for deficiency: iron levels are tested easily with blood samples. Serum iron - tests iron levels in the blood. Ferritin levels - test how well iron is stored in the body, the best indicator of the body's iron levels.

Caution: Excess iron absorption (called hemochromatosis) also causes chronic tiredness so it's important to check your iron levels before using an iron supplement.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is needed for manufacture of red blood cells (along with folic acid). B12 helps the body's use of iron and is also required for proper digestion, the absorption of foods, the synthesis of protein and the metabolism of carbohydrates and fats. No wonder it's important for good energy levels! It is often observed that taking B12 (especially via injections) reduces fatigue, even when a deficiency isn't found.

B12 deficiencies are common due to declining B12 levels in food, increased use of antibiotics and digestive problems. This is because B12 is produced in the digestive tract as well as being absorbed from food. Those most at risk of a B12 deficiency are vegetarians and people with digestive disturbances.

Symptoms of deficiency: fatigue, weakness, dizziness, sore tongue, memory problems, confusion, irritability, depression, moodiness, paleness.

Testing for deficiency: B12 levels can be measured with a blood test

Folic Acid

Folic acid is a B vitamin (also called B9 or folate) needed for the manufacture of red blood cells. Deficiency can lead to a condition called megaloblastic anemia. Fatigue is associated with both a simple folic acid deficiency as well as megaloblastic anemia. Because folic acid is easily destroyed during cooking, it is one of the most common vitamin deficiencies.

Symptoms of deficiency: similar to those of B12, including fatigue, digestive disturbances, insomnia, memory problems, weakness, shortness of breath, recurrent miscarriages, mental confusion, paranoid delusions, sore tongue, anemia.

Testing for deficiency: folic acid levels can be measured with a blood test.

Caution: if folic acid is given to someone who is B12 deficient and B12 isn't given at the same time, the symptoms of a B12 deficiency (especially neurological symptoms) can be masked. Only take folic acid if a B12 deficiency has been ruled out.

Magnesium

Magnesium is needed for the production of ATP, which is the main energy-producing molecule in the body. Therefore, when magnesium is deficient our cells are less able to produce energy and we can experience chronic tiredness. It has been found that nearly all people with chronic fatigue syndrome are magnesium deficient and for about 80 per cent of people given magnesium their energy improves. In fact, magnesium is the most common nutrient deficiency in all people. Most of us would benefit from supplementation even if magnesium levels are unable to be checked.

Symptoms of deficiency: fatigue, irritability, muscle spasms or cramps, rapid or irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, insomnia.

Testing for deficiency: magnesium is not generally tested by blood test. Hair analysis is the most readily available test. Hair mineral levels are a measure of the minerals bound into the hair shaft over a period of time and correlate most closely with tissue levels. The hair analysis test can be performed through specialist laboratories.

Caution: if magnesium supplements worsen your symptoms (especially cramping, twitching and muscle spasms), calcium is probably the deficiency, not magnesium.
